Coping With Shooting Stars
Aside from your predictable actual Geo Market Competitors, Ad Spaces may be littered with passers-by who obviously don’t belong. They don’t belong by virtue of having set the wrong geo-scope for their ad campaigns or by having chosen to purchase ridiculously general keywords. We call these Advertisers, Shooting Stars. While it may take a Shooting Star only 20 minutes or so per day to torch through his $100 ad budget, still, for that glorious 20 minutes your Ad Space will be cluttered with a bogus ad.
What to do about Shooting Stars? Google helps by whacking the poor guy’s quality score. This forces him to bid more each day to serve ads in your ad space. The Shooting Star eventually comes to his senses, or runs out of dough. Although some Ad Spaces seem to be blessed with a revolving door of new Shooting Stars, each one represents only a fleeting and self-solving problem. So unless you really feel up to policing your Ad Space, or just can’t bear to watch a Shooting Star twist in the wind, in terms of remedies, doing nothing may be your best course of action.
